sustainability

Brown GearTech
Brown GearTech is committed to conducting business in a way that minimises environmental impact, supports responsible resource use, and contributes to the long-term sustainability of UK manufacturing. As a trusted supplier of industrial custom gearboxes, power transmission products, and electric motors, we recognise our responsibility to ensure that our operations, products, and services support a cleaner, more sustainable future.
This policy outlines the principles and practices that guide our sustainability efforts across our operations, supply chain, and product lifecycle.
Environmental responsibility
We reduce our environmental footprint through practical measures:
- Waste: all cardboard waste is reused in packaging; production scrap is minimised through accurate specification and machining
- Energy efficiency: LED lighting is used throughout the facility. Key machinery is inverter-controlled to reduce consumption
- Renewables: our Chatham site in Kent, generates solar power on-site and we aim to expand renewable use over time
Product impact: we select correct motor and gearbox sizes to avoid energy waste and design for long-term efficiency
Product lifecycle and end-of-life
All Brown GearTech products are designed to last 40+ years in operation. To further extend lifespan and reduce waste:
- We provide repair services for legacy units
- Customers can return products for recycling at no cost
- Reuse and refurbishment are encouraged wherever viable
Supply chain and transport
We work with UK-based suppliers when possible to reduce transport-related emissions and support local industry. We also:
- Have on-site electric vehicle charging points
- Operate a low-emission vehicle fleet
- Prioritise fast, local deliveries to reduce mileage
- Offer remote meetings and provide a bike rack to reduce travel emissions for staff
Safe, responsible workplaces
Our commitment to staff welfare includes:
- Ongoing health and safety training and access to required PPE
- Compliance with equipment and workplace safety regulations via a third-party advisor
- Dedicated breakout spaces for staff wellbeing
- Promoting awareness of sustainability throughout the workforce
Legal compliance and community
We meet all relevant environmental regulations, including proper disposal of paint booth wastewater via certified contractors. We continue to support local causes and maintain strong ties with the community.
Monitoring and continuous improvement
We are developing systems to monitor and improve our sustainability performance, with future targets to align with recognised national and international practices. This policy will be reviewed annually and updated as needed.
